Pierre Bourdieu wrote that “any art perception involves a conscious or unconscious deciphering operation.” We perceive through all our senses. The ways in which we perceive and express our perceptions is a merging of the spaces around us and the spaces inside of us. The way that we understand concepts of space and ourselves is influenced by our environment.

Space in Los Angeles is different from space in Berlin. What happens when two different perceptions of the same place collide? In our collaborative space at the Torrance Art Museum, a literal translation of the inside space of Axel Obiger provides a backdrop for the artists who run their physical space in Berlin. Their side is juxtaposed with a salon style installation of works by Los Angeles artists, curated by BBQLA, which also incorporates the institutional components of the space of the Torrance Art Museum. Works hang alongside an exit sign and a fire extinguisher, as well as the emergency doors and windows. On each respective side of the shared space, an inside and an outside are brought in, both in conflict and dependent on each other.
