Four Square in the Land of Milk and Honey presents four artists with a focus on their tactics for mining the world around them. Traces of each artist’s visual source is directly evident, retaining characteristics of their genealogy. Excavated, confronted and manipulated, each artist serves up an idiosyncratic translation of culturally shared forms. With this in common, the selected works begin to play a game in which associations are bounced from one to another in a landscape of totems, portals, boulders and playgrounds. Snowmen are built of stones. Gates of velvet. Slides tipped erect become figures and tongues while gargoyles and Hollywood props mingle amongst brutalist architecture. Tracing, stacking, and casting, each artist fabricates elemental building blocks and sets their own playground rules.
