Our environment and our selves grow congruently, nourishing each other. We are among many and we are many within ourselves. We each carry a plethora of masks to navigate our space, and we develop our personal and individual voices alone and through the words of others. A source lays at the beginning of each of us; it is where we find our mothers. It is where we develop our mutual mother tongue. This tongue is more than language. It is visual. It is material. It is our hands and what and who they touch. It is a communication into which we welcome others. It is between what we think and feel and what is expressed.
on the tip of my tongue centers on the visual language of a unified culture in a desperate era, or at least on the voice of the artist, unifying the acts of both doing and thinking. In divergent ways the works that will join our show in San Francisco often utilize the figure or the representation of such as tool of strength, beauty and agency. life’s not fair and people don’t act right represented a dissension between hope and fear. This chapter takes that framework and pulls it together into ideal and idea; and moves us into the adolescent stage of our traveling exhibition. The artist’s work, your work, comes in as a marker for the development of this process: artists speaking to artists and culture as a whole to describe a situation, an experience, and a desire for resolve.
